Surgical procedures on the eyelids, also known as blepharoplasties, are one of the most common procedures performed by cosmetic surgeons. In fact, complaints about the appearance of their eyelids ("I look tired" or "People think I'm mad all the time") are the most common reasons for men to seek cosmetic surgery for the first time. The upper and the lower eyelids are evaluated separately. Most often both the upper and the lower eyelids are approached surgically at the same time.
The procedure can be done under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. Although the procedure is relatively painless it is very important for the person to be very conscientious about applying cold compresses to the eyes for about three days following the procedure to reduce the amount of swelling and bruising that they might otherwise encounter. Results are obvious within a week following eyelid surgery when the stitches are removed but bruising may persist for two to three weeks.
